I think a lot of health problems are caused by lack of self-love. Religions usually teach that you should love others and forget the most important part : AS yourself. Love others as much as you love yourself. If you don't love who you are, how can you love someone else?
May I pick at this a bit? I think focusing on loving yourself can lead to narcissism or narcissistic behavior. I do like you bringing attention to “as yourself” when acknowledging loving others. I think keeping it in context is a beautiful way to remind some people to stop leaving themselves behind. Women with husbands and children can be especially prone to “leaving themselves behind”. Some men as well, in a different way. I actually think narcissism has taken a strong hold in our culture with too much emphasis on putting yourself first. Which is not the kind of love you’re talking about but more selfish and nihilistic.
